The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Emeritus Professor David G. Brandon. A true pillar of our community, Prof. Brandon was not merely a member of the department but one of its visionary founders. His central role in shaping its foundational teaching program established the rigorous academic bedrock upon which generations of students have built their careers.

Prof. Brandon’s scientific legacy is immense. He pioneered the development of electron microscopy for materials science in Israel, a breakthrough that illuminated the very building blocks of matter and industry. This expertise, which he first honed at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Metallurgy under a UK Atomic Energy Authority program, became a beacon of innovation here. His influence extended far beyond the laboratory walls. As a gifted educator and mentor, his former students now serve as professors at the Technion and universities nationwide, and lead in key positions across Israel’s high-tech sector, driving the nation’s technological frontier.

His impact on the Technion and on Israel has been profound and enduring. Professor Brandon was a scientist of exceptional caliber and a builder of institutions and human capital. His passing is a profound loss to us all.
