GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services family is mourning the off-duty death of Firemedic Joshua Garay, who passed away on January 18, 2026.

Garay joined the department in March 2024, beginning his service at Fire Station 6. Demonstrating a commitment to advancing his skills, he subsequently attended paramedic school at the county’s Training Academy. At the time of his passing, he was precepting at Fire Station 20, actively gaining the hands-on experience required to serve as a full paramedic on the ambulance.

In a heartfelt social media post, the department remembered Garay for his “positive attitude, warm and welcoming smile, and genuine eagerness to learn and grow in his craft.” Although his tenure with Gwinnett County was brief, officials noted his significant impact on both his team and the community he served.

“While his time with Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services was short, his impact on our team and the community was vast,” the department stated. Colleagues recalled him not only as a dedicated public servant but as a beloved member of the fire family.

The department concluded its tribute with a traditional fire service farewell: “Thank you for your dedication and service, Firemedic Joshua Garay; rest easy, and we’ll take it from here.” The circumstances surrounding his off-duty death have not been publicly disclosed.
